Sunshine Sugar has welcomed six new first year apprentices into the business across our three sugar mills at the start of 2023.

This week we caught up with Robert Sullivan, Apprentice Fitter at Broadwater sugar mill.

Twenty-one-year-old Robert started his four-year Fitter Apprenticeship with Sunshine Sugar in January 2023 and is quickly picking up new skills, particularly in the area of machining.

As an avid vintage firearms collector, the ability to machine and fabricate parts will compliment his hobby and provide a great foundation to becoming a qualified gunsmith longer term.

“I’ve only been in the role for a few weeks, but I’m really enjoying working in a team where I’m already learning so much and able to give things a go”; said Robert.

Working with a team comprising both experienced boilermakers and other apprentices, Robert is supported at every turn. With so many moving parts, a sugar mill often requires its fitters to be problem solvers as well as hands-on tradespeople.

In addition to the team support he receives, Robert describes his supervisor Sam Day as not just a very competent fitter, but a great mentor.

With the NSW sugar mills currently in maintenance mode ahead of the 2023 crushing season, the team have a full program of work in place repairing, replacing and undertaking routine checks.
