About Sunshine Sugar

In 1989 a joint venture was formed between Manildra Group and the New South Wales Sugar Milling Cooperative to refine the total New South Wales output of raw sugar.

Manildra Harwood Sugars produces over 250,000 tonnes of sugar per annum.

The refinery is located adjacent to the Cooperative’s Harwood sugar mill on northern New South Wales. It employs the latest computerised technology for the efficient production of a range of cane sugars.

Refined sugar is transported in specially built rail wagons and is available in bulk, semi-bulk, packaged or liquid forms

The New South Wales
Sugar Industry

The sugar industry has been a part of life in Northern NSW for more than 100 years. It is a significant contributor to the economy of the are and provides the community with employment opportunities & growth.

It is one of the region’s biggest employers and accounts for $230 million of regional economic output. The total employment in the region is about 2,300. This includes 450 at the mill end refinery employees and 550 cane farmers.

The NSW Sugar Milling Co-operative was formed when cane growers purchased the three NSW sugar mills in 1978. The mills are located at Condong on the Tweed River, Broadwater on the Richmond River and Harwood on the Clarence River. In addition, the Co-operative now operates a sugar refinery which is located alongside the Harwood Mill. This is owned by a joint venture company, Manildra Harwood Sugars, in which the Co-operative is 50% partner.

The NSW sugar industry occupies approximately 34,000 hectares of the Northern Rivers region and extends from near the QLD border in the north to Grafton in the south.
